Last two weeks of November 2018 we had the honor of receiving the General Board of the Congregation of the Brothers of Good Works in Ethiopia. We welcomed Br Ton from Belgium, Br Franklin from Curacao and Br Nico and Br Herman from Indonesia. The General board members visited our projects and were sincerely interested and involved in our work. We really felt valued and we appreciated that they took the effort of sharing their thoughts and ideas. Please see the pictures as they say more than a 1000 words! The Counseling and Social Services Center (CSSC) has a holistic approach which is unique in Addis Ababa. Assessment show that 93% of the beneficiaries experience improved quality of life and 95% of the beneficiaries is financially independent through economic empowerment.
The Elderly People Support Program (EPSP) has currently 106 elderly people in the program. In a relatively simple way, this project brings dignity and human contact back into the lives of a group of vulnerable elderly people. All elderly experience feel improved quality of life.
Housing project: Many clients of the CSSC and EPSP live in poor conditions. The elderly often become homeless because they cannot keep up the maintenance of their houses. BGW projects Ethiopia waterproofs homes, and replaces roofs, supports walls and construct cement floors. Sometimes we construct an entirely new house. All construction is done with traditional materials and by local day laborers after permission from the local government. Around 22 families receive good housing each year.
Communal toilets: In cooperation with the local government an average of 90 households (510 beneficiaries) get Communal toilets yearly. And this is needed as a lot of people have inadequate sanitation. Excrement ends up in the river or in a pit nearby. Diarrhea typhus and cholera is commonplace. Many women and girls do not feel safe in the open and exposed conditions. The beneficiaries are responsible for the toilets and receive information about hygiene and the use of the toilets. These toilets secure a huge improvement in hygiene, safety of women and girls and cohesion in the community.
Saint Gabriel Catholic Health Center (SGCHC) SGCHC is a faith based health center owned by the Diocese. SGCHC is part of the public health services providing health facilities and serves the poor. SGCHC provided services to more than 40,000 patients 2018. The SGCHC needs a thorough over all renovation and the Congregation offered to cover the costs for the roof repair of the Mother and Child department. We also like to have solar but this is too expensive at the moment. In the waiting room a shortage of benches and chairs is experienced so funds need to be found for this inventory. Br Nico gave the idea of covering the waiting room. It was such a good experience to have the General Board in Addis Ababa. They could see, hear and feel the need of our beneficiaries and could see that the work done is worth it….Thanks again for all your efforts towards the BGW projects Ethiopia
