Communal toilets Residents of slums in Addis Ababa often have inadequate sanitation. Excrement ends up in the river or in a pit nearby. Due to these poor hygienic conditions, diarrhea is commonplace; typhus and cholera are frequent issues as well. Many women and girls do not feel safe in the open and exposed conditions. BGW projects Ethiopia, in cooperation with the local authorities and residents, builds toilet blocks with 4, 6, or 8 simple and effective squat toilets in these poor neighborhoods of Addis Ababa. Multiple families make use of and are responsible for one toilet. They receive information about hygiene and the use of the toilets. In addition to a huge improvement in hygienic conditions, the toilet building also promotes the safety of women and girls. Furthermore, the project also unites residents as they are jointly responsible for the use, upkeep and maintenance of these facilities. Each year 120-130 families are provided with a new toilet building. These toilet buildings costs € 50,000 – 55,000 on an annual basis.

House building and repair Many clients of the Counseling & Social Services Center live in poor conditions. The houses of children with disabilities are often not accessible for wheelchairs and the elderly often become homeless because they cannot keep up the maintenance of their houses. BGW projects Ethiopia waterproofs homes, and replaces roofs, supports walls and ensures that children in wheelchairs have easy access to their homes. In some instances an entirely new house is constructed. All construction is done with traditional materials and by local day laborers after permission from the local government. In this way, 25 families receive good housing each year. The cost for this project is € 42,000 per year.
