HIV-TB clinic project description
St Gabriel Catholic Health Center is located in a poor, densely populated and highly industrialized part of Addis Ababa. The health center was established at the request of the city council by the archbishop of Addis Ababa in collaboration with Brothers of Good Works, Ethiopia. Many low-skilled workers live and work in this part of the city, and there is little knowledge in the field of health and hygiene. Patients with a low income barely have access to good healthcare in Ethiopia, many people are sick and illnesses are not timely diagnosed. Women often give birth without professional supervision and in poor hygienic conditions. As a result, 353 out of every 100,000 pregnant women die during or just after giving birth. (In the Netherlands, this figure is 6 in every 100,000 births.) According to figures from Unicef 2019, 29 out of 1,000 newborn babies and 59 children under five years die of malnutrition, poor health care and poor living conditions. St Gabriel Catholic health center offers affordable healthcare to vulnerable social groups. There is extensive pregnancy and maternity counselling for mother and child. Children are fully vaccinated and mothers receive information about growth and development, childhood diseases and family planning. The health center offers general practitioner care, first aid and guidance to HIV patients and has its own laboratory and pharmacy. To increase the knowledge in the area of health and hygiene, there is a broad education program for the neighbourhood, schools and factories. The center trains factory workers and students so that they can discuss hygiene, HIV, safe sex, vaccinations, safe working and the prevention of (contagious) diseases during peer group discussions with their colleagues and fellow students. -Every year, 24,000 patients come for general practitioner care, 1,500 mothers for pregnancy guidance, 850 babies are born and vaccinated and 9,000 children under the age of 5 enter the special children's department. 550 HIV+ patients come every two weeks for monitoring and medication. With the prevention program, the health centre reaches 24,000 people per year 58 employees work at the St Gabriel, Catholic health center; the total costs per year are € 300,000.
