Ethiopia, together with Somalia, Eritrea and Djibouti, forms the so-called “Horn of Arica”. Ethiopia is 5 times the size of the United Kingdom or 3 times the size of Germany and has an estimated 104 million inhabitants. The population is increasing rapidly: from 33.5 million inhabitants in 1983 to (a forecasted) 188 million in 2050. There are various religions, of which Christianity (mainly Ethiopian Orthodox) and Islam are the largest. More than 20% of the country’s population lives in one of the larger cities. According to the U.N. almost 45% of the Ethiopians live below the poverty line. BGW-projects Ethiopia works in Addis Ababa, the capital and largest city of Ethiopia, which has about 4 million inhabitants. The headquarters of the African Union and the U.N. Economic Commission for Africa are based in Addis Ababa. In addition, there are more than 120 international missions and embassies, making Addis Ababa the “political capital of Africa”. In all, this makes Addis Ababa a city of great contradictions where densely populated slums can be found next to modern office buildings.
